Garrett Kincaid
Editor & Writing Coach
Personality-wise, Garrett has a rare mix of candor and supportiveness. Work-wise, he has a careful eye. He wants to hold you to a higher standard and he’s got the talent to do it.

It’s invaluable to work witih Garrett. I really enjoyed riffing on ideas in our live calls, and came away with an outline I could use to turn my galaxy-brain ideas into a well-organized book.

Writing and editing are entirely different skills, yet they are symbiotic. The challenge of writing, of course, is getting words on the page. The challenge of editing is getting the right words off the page.
Garrett is great to work with. He cares about writing and gets excited about other people’s ideas in a way that helps a writer get to the core of what they want to say.

Garrett has helped me develop and refine my voice in ways I wouldn’t have been able to alone. He is talented, precise, relentless, and passionate. Guaranteed, he will be just as committed to your vision as you are.
Grace CapobiancoWrites The G Word
Scott and I worked together over several months to revise his draft, focusing on compression. By the end, Scott had cut 25% from his manuscript without cutting a single chapter.

Dear writer,
At nineteen, I self-published my first book (to no acclaim or profit), and I’ve been writing and editing ever since. My first book introduced me to the freedom of self-publishing and the power of self-editing. I taught myself the skills that lead to cohesive, clear, and concise prose. And now I coach others.
The best way to become a better writer is to become a better self-editor.
That means learning to see your writing through the eyes of your reader. It means taking an objective and detached look at something you’ve created and doing the humble and noble thing of making it better, bit by bit.
An editor is a mediator, simultaneously serving the intersts of both the writer and the reader.
Editors help writers get unstuck, whether with a vote of confidence or a critical note that helps the writer see their work anew. The editor improves a piece of writing by advocating on behalf of the reader (without compromising the writer’s vision).
My job is not to prescribe a "better" word; it is to intuit the word you intend but have yet to apprehend.
My skill lies in seeing what you’re going for and helping you get there. I have no interest in hijacking your work or wedging myself into the chair as your ghostwriter. I have my own writing to do. As your editor, I make suggestions aligned with your vision, then leave the writing and revising to you.
Come to me with your most ambitious project. I’ll make sure you get it done and that it’s the best thing you’ve ever written.

Garrett’s editorial guidance is a must if you want to improve your craft. He has shown me how words can paint vivid pictures, evoke strong emotions, and make ideas come alive.

Garrett guided me through the entire writing process, from brainstorming to the final proofread. He gave structure my ideas and suggested edits that helped my voice come through. I so apprecaite all the time he spent on this essay. It’s now my most popular post—by far.
